Dear Young People, Do Something!


"Knock the Vote" is a campaign made by ACRONYM, an organization that utilizes digital media to encourage people vote democrat. In the most recent primary election the organization created a video entitled "Dear Young People, Don't Vote: A Knock the Vote PSA". The video included many elderly, white, rich Trump supporters who told the younger generation not to vote in the upcoming election.

Was that the reason the video was made? Certainly not. The video was intended to scare young people into voting. The comedic video had elders discuss problems of today and dismiss it because it wasn't relevant to them. The video pointed out problems such as taxes, climate change, school shootings and black lives matter.

The main message of the video was to get millenials to vote because it's their future at stake. If they want something to change, they need to vote. In the final seconds of the video, a man said "We're a generation of doers, not whiners" this statement is really powerful and mocks the younger generation for not voting at all. Yes, they can go on "one of those little marches" but they aren't really doing anything drastic to change their future.

The way this organization presented the problem was very well thought out. I thought the way they addressed the problem was very clever and has the power to change thousands. Yes, getting younger Americans to vote wont change the country, but it's a step in the right direction that would eventually lead into something big.

Although this video was made for Americans, they provoked me into voting when I'm older. The thought of someone being in power because of elders, is terrifying because they aren't affected by today's problems. an elder woman in the video said "Climate change? That’s a ‘you’ problem. I’ll be dead soon" that statement really hit home for me because of how educated I am on the risks and effects climate change. It made me realize that these problems aren't going to solve themselves and my generation has the power to make changes.

This PSA is very effective and calls out millennials for being lazy and whiners. The fact this is on digital media will also spread the message faster, due to that the fact the younger generations are only capable of reposting instead of doing.
